Why Your Houston AC Can't Keep Up (and What to Check First)
It's mid-August in Houston. The thermostat says 76 but the house feels like 82, sticky and thick. The unit is running non-stop and your bill keeps climbing. Sound familiar? In Houston, an AC that "can't keep up" is one of the most common summer complaints — and it's usually the climate doing exactly what it does here.

Your Houston AC has two jobs, not one
Everywhere else, an air conditioner mostly just cools. In Houston, it has to cool and dehumidify at the same time — and pulling moisture out of thick Gulf air is often the harder job. From roughly May through October, that moisture load runs heavy every single day.
When a system can't keep up with the humidity, the air still feels warm and clammy even when the temperature reading looks fine. That "76 but feels like 82" gap is almost always a humidity problem, not just a temperature one.
Why Houston systems get pushed past their limit
Houston AC units often run nearly non-stop from March through October. That kind of runtime turns small issues into breakdowns:
- Capacitor failure. The capacitor helps start your compressor and fan motors, and it's one of the most common parts to die in Houston's prolonged heat. When it goes, the outdoor unit hums but won't start.
- Dirty condenser coils. The outdoor coil dumps heat outside. Caked in Houston dust, pollen, and grass clippings, it can't shed heat, so the system works harder and cools less.
- Low refrigerant. Usually a slow leak. The system can't absorb and move heat properly, so it runs forever without getting cold.
- Clogged filter or restricted drain line. A dirty filter chokes airflow; a clogged condensate drain (very common in our humidity) can shut the system down or cause water damage.
- An undersized or aging system. A unit that was borderline in a mild year simply can't handle a brutal Houston summer once it loses a little efficiency.
What you can check yourself first
Before you call anyone, run through these — a couple of them fix the problem outright:
- Change the air filter. A clogged filter is the single most common cause of weak airflow. If it's gray, replace it.
- Look at the outdoor unit. Clear leaves, grass, and debris from around it, and gently rinse the coils with a garden hose (power off first). Give it two feet of clearance on all sides.
- Check the condensate drain. If you see standing water near the indoor unit or the system shut itself off, the drain line may be clogged.
- Set the fan to AUTO, not ON. Running the fan constantly in humidity can re-evaporate moisture back into the house, making it feel muggier.
- Give it realistic expectations. On a 100°+ Houston day, many systems can only pull the indoor temp 15–20 degrees below outdoor. Setting it to 68 won't get you there — it'll just run non-stop.
If you've done all that and it still can't keep up, it's a pro's job.

Call someone if you notice:
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan won't spin (often a capacitor).
- Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil (airflow or refrigerant issue).
- Warm air from the vents while the system runs.

- Water pooling around the indoor unit.
