HoustonProsHQ should be usable by everyone, including people who browse with a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, or need larger text and higher contrast. This page says what we do about that and how to tell us when we have got it wrong.

What we aim for

We build against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. That is the standard most commonly referenced for public websites in the United States.

What that means on this site

  • Every page works without a mouse. You can reach the search box, the navigation, and every listing using only the keyboard, and the focus outline stays visible as you go.
  • Text and background colours meet the 4.5:1 contrast ratio the guidelines ask for, including link text and buttons.
  • Images carry alternative text describing what they show, and images that are purely decorative are marked so screen readers skip them.
  • Pages use real headings in order, so a screen reader can jump between sections instead of reading everything top to bottom.
  • The site is built as plain HTML with no pop-ups, no auto-playing media, and no content that moves on its own.
  • Text resizes cleanly when you zoom, and the layout reflows on a phone rather than forcing you to scroll sideways.

Where we know we fall short

Business listings are built from public sources, and some include photographs supplied by the business. Where a photograph arrives without a description we write one, but on a directory this size some will be thinner than they should be. If you hit one that is not useful, tell us and we will fix that listing.

We do not use an accessibility overlay or accessibility widget. Those tools are widely reported to interfere with the screen readers and browser settings people already rely on, so we would rather fix the underlying pages.
