Getting your car detailed in Houston

Detailing is unlicensed, and the word covers everything from a good wash to a multi-day paint correction. Getting the terminology straight is most of what you need.

• Wash and wax — cleaning plus a short-lived protective layer. Weeks to a few months.
• Full detail — interior and exterior, usually including clay bar, a machine polish and a sealant. Half a day or more.
• Paint correction — machine polishing that actually removes swirls and scratches by cutting a fraction of the clear coat. Measured in stages (one-step, two-step). This is skilled work and it is not reversible.
• Ceramic coating — a semi-permanent layer applied on top of corrected paint. Priced in years of expected life.

The order matters, and it is where people waste money. A ceramic coating locks in whatever is underneath it. Paying for a coating over unpolished swirled paint seals the defects in. Any detailer who explains that unprompted is worth listening to.

Houston-specific

• Sun and heat are the reason coatings and sealants sell well here. A car parked outside in this UV loses gloss fast.
• Hard water spotting is a real problem in this region. Washing in direct sun on a driveway with hard water etches spots into clear coat, which is a correction job later.
• Love bugs and lawn chemicals in season, and pollen in spring, are the seasonal jobs.
• Hail. After a storm, detailing does not fix hail — that is paintless dent repair, a different trade. Do not let the two get bundled without a clear scope.

Mobile versus shop

Mobile detailers come to you and that is genuinely the product — a full detail is three to five hours, and having it happen in your driveway while you work is different from sitting in a waiting room. What a shop offers is controlled lighting and shade, which matters a great deal for paint correction. For a wash-and-protect, mobile is fine. For correction, ask where the work happens.
