Once a month, the local businesses around Houston worth knowing about — written the same way the hidden gems guides are, by asking neighbours rather than reading ads.
What's in it
- New places, early. Businesses that just opened around Willis, Magnolia, Conroe, Tomball and the rest — usually before they've got reviews, let alone a queue.
- The hidden gems people keep naming. The bakery at the back of a building. The barbecue place open weekends only. The taqueria in a supermarket car park. The ones you only ever hear about from a neighbour.
- Who's actually winning the local votes. Every listing on the site has a vote button, and it's one vote per person per category — so a small shop with loyal customers can beat a big name on the strength of the people who love it.
- Reader-only discounts. We're working on talking the owners we feature into offers that only readers get. When they're real, they'll be in here — and we'll say so plainly rather than dangling it.
- The people, not just the business names. Who runs it, why they started, what they're actually good at.
What it isn't
Nobody pays to appear in it. A business can't buy its way into an issue, and if that ever changes it'll be labelled clearly in the email itself. A listing on the site is free too, and always will be.
It goes out once a month. Not weekly, not daily — one you'll actually read beats four you delete. Every issue has a one-click unsubscribe, and your address is never sold, shared, or used for anything else.
Where it comes from
The same place the guides do. We ask community groups which local businesses deserve more attention than they get, and then go and check the details — the address, the hours, the phone number, what they're actually known for. The Willis guide and the Magnolia guide are what a month's worth of that looks like.
