Renting a boat on Lake Conroe and around Houston
Most rentals in this region are on Lake Conroe, with Galveston Bay and the Gulf as the saltwater options. The rules differ meaningfully depending on how you rent.
Bareboat versus captained — this changes everything
- Bareboat (you drive). The rental company hands you the keys. Texas boater education requirements apply — broadly, anyone born on or after 1 September 1993 must have completed an approved boater education course to operate a powered vessel over a certain horsepower. Ask the rental company what they require and bring the certificate; showing up without it is the most common reason a rental falls through at the dock.
- Captained. A licensed captain operates the boat. In US waters, carrying paying passengers requires a US Coast Guard licence, and the vessel is subject to Coast Guard requirements. If you are paying to be taken out, ask whether the captain is USCG licensed. It is a fair question and legitimate operators answer it instantly.
What to confirm before you pay a deposit
- What is included? Fuel is the big one — most rentals bill fuel separately on return. Ask how it is calculated.
- Life jackets for everyone aboard, in the right sizes, including children. Ask specifically about child sizes when booking.
- Capacity. Every boat has a rated capacity. Do not plan a party around exceeding it.
- Deposit and damage policy. Ask what the damage deposit is, what counts as damage, and whether a waiver is offered.
- Weather cancellation. Ask the policy and the deadline. Storms move fast on Lake Conroe.
Practical for this region
- Summer weekends book out. Lake Conroe in July is busy; reserve well ahead.
- Lake level matters. In drought years hazards appear that are normally submerged. Ask the operator about current conditions and where not to go — they know.
- Alcohol. Boating while intoxicated is enforced the same as driving, and Texas game wardens work these lakes actively. Designate an operator.
- Sun exposure on open water is brutal here. Shade, water and sunscreen matter more than people expect on a Gulf Coast afternoon.
Ask for a walkthrough before you leave the dock — controls, kill switch, trim, anchor and what to do if it will not start. A good operator gives you one without being asked.
