Hiring a handyman in Houston

There is no handyman licence in Texas. That is fine for the work handymen should be doing — and it is exactly why the boundary matters.

The line a good handyman will draw themselves

Some work legally requires a licensed trade regardless of who is holding the screwdriver:

• Plumbing beyond simple fixture swaps — licensed plumber, working under an RMP.
• Electrical beyond replacing a fixture or device — licensed electrician (TECL).
• HVAC — licensed contractor (TACL).
• Gas work of any kind.

A handyman who volunteers "that one needs a licensed plumber" has just told you they are worth keeping. One who offers to move a gas line or add a circuit is a liability in your house.

What a handyman is genuinely the right hire for

Drywall repair and texture, interior and exterior painting, doors and trim, flooring repairs, caulking and grout, fixture installation, fence and deck repairs, pressure washing, TV mounting and furniture assembly, and the long list of small things that no specialist wants to drive out for. Rental turns and make-ready punch lists are a specialty of their own and several companies here do that specifically.

Pricing

Ask which model you are getting, because both exist and they suit different jobs:

• Hourly, often with a minimum — better for a list of small unrelated tasks.
• Per job / flat quote — better for one defined thing.

If you have a list, say so up front. Most handymen price a half or full day of accumulated small jobs far more favourably than three separate call-outs, and the drive time is what you are really paying for on a single small task.

Two things to confirm

• Insurance. Not required by the state, and worth asking about anyway — someone is on a ladder in your house.
• Who supplies materials? If they do, ask whether materials are marked up. Either answer is fine; not knowing is what causes the argument at invoice time.

Get the scope in writing even for small jobs. "Fix the fence" and "replace three pickets" are different sentences and only one of them is a quote.
