Hiring an irrigation company in Houston
This is one of the trades people assume is unregulated and is not. Texas licenses irrigators through the TCEQ — the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Anyone selling, designing, installing, altering, repairing or maintaining an irrigation system in Texas generally needs to be a licensed irrigator or a registered technician working under one, and licensed irrigators must give you specific paperwork.
Ask for the licence number. It is public and checkable. This single question removes most of the risk in this trade, and it is the reason a suspiciously cheap sprinkler quote is worth a second look.
What a licensed irrigator owes you
For a new installation, Texas rules require the irrigator to provide an irrigation plan and a maintenance checklist, and to install specific components — including a backflow prevention device to protect the drinking water supply, and a rain or moisture sensor. If none of that comes up in the conversation, you are probably not talking to a licensed irrigator.
The Houston-specific problems
- Clay soil runs off. Heavy clay absorbs water slowly, so a long single run mostly ends up in the street. The fix is cycle-and-soak scheduling — several shorter runs with gaps — and a controller that supports it. Ask.
- Head-to-head coverage. Dry rings between heads are the most common design fault and they show up as brown circles in July, not in March when the system was installed.
- Sprinkler overspray on windows etches glass permanently in this hard-water region, and overspray on the house siding does no favours either. Worth walking the zones at night with the system running.
- Foundation watering. On expansive clay some homeowners run soaker lines near the slab in drought. Opinions differ and it is worth a specific conversation rather than a default.
Repairs versus systems
Most calls in this trade are a few broken heads, a valve, or a controller. Ask whether there is a service call fee, whether it is credited against the repair, and what the hourly or per-head rate is. For a system that has been neglected, a full system audit — every zone run and checked — is usually cheaper than fixing symptoms one visit at a time.
