Choosing a primary care doctor in Houston

Verify the licence, it takes a minute

Every physician practising in Texas is licensed by the Texas Medical Board, and the register is public. You can look up any doctor by name and see licence status, specialty, medical school, and whether there is public disciplinary action. Do it once, before the first appointment.

Board certification is separate from licensure — it means the physician completed residency in a specialty and passed its board exams, and it is verifiable through the certifying board. For primary care the relevant boards are family medicine and internal medicine.

Understand who you will actually see

Many practices are team-based, and you may see a nurse practitioner or physician assistant for routine visits. That is normal and often means faster access. It is worth knowing up front rather than discovering it, and worth asking whether you can request the physician for specific concerns.

Also ask who covers when your doctor is away, and whether the practice is affiliated with a particular hospital system. In Houston that affiliation determines where you end up if you are admitted, and the systems here are large and distinct.

The questions that decide day-to-day experience

• How far out is a routine appointment, and can you be seen same-day when sick? This is the single biggest practical difference between practices.
• Is there a patient portal, and do they answer messages through it?
• Do they offer telehealth for follow-ups?
• Which insurance do they take, and are they in-network for your specific plan? In-network status varies by plan, not just by carrier — confirm with the plan, not only with the office.

Concierge and direct primary care

A growing number of Houston practices operate on a membership model — a monthly or annual fee for longer appointments and direct access, sometimes outside insurance entirely. It is a legitimate model that suits some people well. If you encounter it, ask clearly what the fee covers, what still bills to insurance, and what happens to your care if you stop paying it.

Bring your medication list and your family history to the first visit. It makes that appointment substantially more useful.
