Choosing a vet in Houston
Veterinarians are licensed in Texas by the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, and the register is public — licence status, and any disciplinary history. Worth checking once.
Sort out emergency coverage before you need it
This is the thing people wish they had known. Ask your regular clinic:
- What are your hours, and what do I do at 2am?
- Which emergency hospital do you refer to?
Most general practices are not 24-hour, and Houston's emergency veterinary hospitals are separate businesses. Knowing the name and the drive time in advance, rather than searching for it while your dog is in distress, is worth the one question.
AAHA accreditation
Accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association is voluntary and a minority of practices hold it. It involves an on-site evaluation against several hundred standards covering anaesthesia, surgery, pain management, record keeping and equipment. It is not a requirement and plenty of excellent clinics skip it — but where a practice has it, it is a real, externally checked signal.
Houston-specific animal health
Ask the clinic what they recommend for this region specifically, because it differs from other parts of the country:
- Year-round parasite prevention. Mild winters mean fleas, ticks and mosquitoes here do not get a killing season. Heartworm, carried by mosquitoes, is a serious and genuinely regional concern along the Gulf Coast.
- Heat. Brachycephalic breeds and any dog exercised in a Houston August need different management. Ask.
- Hurricane planning. Ask whether the clinic keeps records accessible remotely, and make sure your pet is microchipped with your current phone number. Evacuation separations are the reason.
Cost conversations
Ask for an estimate before procedures and ask what the range is if they find something unexpected. Ask whether the practice offers payment plans or works with third-party financing — good clinics discuss this openly and it is far easier before a crisis than during one.
If you are considering pet insurance, buy it before the pet has a condition, not after. Pre-existing exclusions are the entire economics of that product.
