Finding a mechanic in Houston

Texas does not license auto mechanics. There is no state exam and no board. The credential that exists is ASE certification — a private, voluntary set of exams from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Individual technicians hold it by specialty (brakes, engine performance, transmission, and so on), and a shop can be recognised as a Blue Seal shop when enough of its staff are certified.

Ask which technicians are ASE certified and in what. It is the closest thing this trade has to a licence.

Your rights on an estimate

You are entitled to know what you are agreeing to before work starts. Ask for a written estimate and make clear the shop should call you before exceeding it. Ask for your old parts back — a reasonable request, occasionally revealing, and shops that resent it are telling you something. And ask whether there is a diagnostic fee and whether it is credited toward the repair.

The independent-versus-dealer question

• Dealer — factory training, factory diagnostic tools, factory parts, highest rate. Worth it for warranty work, recalls and genuinely brand-specific electronics.
• Independent specialist — a shop that works mainly on your make often matches dealer expertise at a lower rate.
• General independent — best value for routine work on common vehicles.

For anything computer-heavy, ask directly whether they have the diagnostic capability for your make. "We can pull codes" is not the same as being able to program a module.

Houston-specific

• Heat is what kills cars here. Cooling systems, batteries and air conditioning do far more work in this climate than the maintenance schedule assumes. A battery that would last five years in a mild climate frequently does not here.
• Flood history. Houston has had repeated major flooding, and flood-damaged vehicles circulate on the used market. If you are buying used, a pre-purchase inspection is the cheapest money in this entire trade — and ask the shop specifically to look for water damage.
• Annual state inspection requirements have changed in recent years; ask the shop what currently applies to your vehicle and county rather than assuming.

Warranty

Ask what the warranty is on parts and on labour, in months and miles, and get it on the invoice. Reputable shops commonly offer 12/12,000 or better, and many are part of national warranty networks that honour the work if you break down out of town.
