Finding a barber in Houston

Barbering is a licensed trade in Texas, regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Both the individual barber and the shop are licensed, and the licence is required to be displayed. That is why you see certificates on the wall — and why a shop that has none is unusual enough to ask about.

TDLR also inspects for the sanitation rules that matter in a shop: clean implements, proper disinfection between clients, and single-use items where required.

The distinction people get wrong

Barbers and cosmetologists hold different licences and, broadly, learn different things. Barbering training centres on clipper work, fades, shears over comb and razor shaving; cosmetology centres on chemical services and longer hair. Plenty of practitioners cross over well, and neither licence makes someone good. But if you want a skin fade or a straight-razor neck shave, a barber shop is the more reliable default.

Booking

Houston shops split roughly into three models and it is worth knowing which you are walking into:

• Walk-in only — no appointments, first come first served, expect a wait at peak.
• Appointment only — usually booked through an online system, often per-barber.
• Both, with appointments taking priority.

Many barbers here run their own chair inside a shop and take their own bookings, which means you are choosing a person, not a business. If you find one you like, book directly with them and keep their link.

On price and tipping

Prices vary widely and often include things you should ask about rather than assume — a hot towel, shampoo, beard trim and neck shave are included in some men's cuts and are add-ons elsewhere. Ask what the quoted price covers. Tipping the barber directly, in cash, is the norm.

Practical

• If it is your first visit, arrive with a photo rather than a description. "Short on the sides" means a dozen things.
• Ask what number guard was used and write it down. It makes every future visit easier, including at a different shop.
• For kids' cuts, ask whether the shop does them at all — some do not, and finding out at the door with a four-year-old is nobody's good afternoon.
