Choosing a gym in Houston

The most useful thing to know about gyms in Texas has nothing to do with equipment: facilities that sell memberships are regulated under the state's health spa law and are generally required to register with the Texas Secretary of State and post security, such as a bond. The point of the law is to protect members if a gym closes with prepaid memberships outstanding — which happens more than the industry likes to admit.

Two practical consequences:

• You usually have a short window to cancel a newly signed contract. Texas law provides a cancellation right on health spa contracts. Read the contract for the exact terms before you sign, not after.
• Prepaying a long term for a discount is the risky version. The steeper the multi-year discount, the more you are lending the gym money.

The contract, not the gym, is what people regret

Ask these before you sign anything:

• Is this month-to-month or a term contract, and what does early cancellation cost?
• What is the cancellation procedure? Some require written notice by mail with a notice period. If cancelling is harder than joining, that is deliberate.
• Are there annual maintenance or enhancement fees on top of the monthly rate?
• Does the rate change after an introductory period?

What actually predicts whether you keep going

Not the equipment list. Two things:

• Distance. The best-equipped gym twenty minutes away loses to an adequate one you drive past. In Houston traffic this is not a small effect.
• Peak-hour density. Visit at the exact time you would actually train — 6am or 5:30pm — not at 11am when the sales tour is scheduled. A gym that is pleasant at noon and unusable at six is a different product from the one you were shown.

On trainers

Personal trainers are not licensed in Texas. Certifications like NASM, ACE, ACSM and NSCA are real and worth asking about, but they are private credentials, not state ones. Ask which certification, whether it is current, and whether they carry liability insurance — particularly for anyone training you in your home or a park rather than inside a facility.
