Order-gatherers versus real local florists

Many websites that appear when you search "florist near me" are order-gathering services. They take your money, keep a share, and pass the remaining budget to whichever shop is nearest — which means the arrangement you saw is not what gets designed, and a meaningful part of what you paid never reached the flowers.

How to tell you are talking to a real shop: it lists a street address, a local phone number, and its own delivery zip codes. If the site shows no physical address, you are probably not buying from a florist.

Calling the shop directly is almost always cheaper and better than ordering through a national site, and it lets you have the conversation below.

The conversation that gets you a better arrangement

Rather than picking a photograph, tell a florist three things: the occasion, your budget, and any colours to use or avoid. Then let them design with what came in fresh that week. Nearly every florist will tell you this produces a better arrangement than replicating a stock photo with out-of-season stems, and it is the single best piece of advice in this trade.

Ask what is in season. It is where the value is.

Weddings and events are a separate business

Event florists and daily-delivery shops are often different companies with different skills. If you are planning a wedding, the questions are:

• Do they visit the venue beforehand?
• Do they deliver and set up?
• Do they come back to collect and clean up? This is the one couples forget, and the difference between finishing your evening and coordinating an arch teardown at 10pm.

Delivery, and Houston in particular

• Ask the cut-off time for same-day delivery — early afternoon is typical.
• Ask which zip codes they actually cover. Greater Houston is enormous and no shop covers all of it.
• Heat. Flowers left on a porch in a Houston August do not survive long. Ask whether they will call the recipient, and consider a business address for summer deliveries.
• Funeral work has its own timing rules — the funeral home usually has a delivery window. Tell the florist which home and when.
