Hiring a gutter company in Houston

Unlicensed trade, low barrier to entry, and one detail that matters far more here than in most of the country: size.

Houston rainfall breaks standard gutters

A standard 5-inch K-style gutter is sized for a normal rainfall rate. Houston does not have a normal rainfall rate. On a large roof plane in a Gulf Coast downpour, a 5-inch gutter overflows at the front edge — and the water it fails to carry lands at the base of your foundation, on expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. That is how a gutter problem becomes a foundation problem.

Ask specifically:

  • What size are you quoting — 5, 6 or 7 inch? On big roof planes, 6-inch is often the right answer here and it is a modest upcharge.
  • How many downspouts, and what size? Undersized or too-few downspouts defeat a correctly sized gutter.
  • Where does the water go once it leaves the downspout? Splash blocks at the wall are the cheap answer. Underground drains carrying water away from the slab are the real one, and several Houston gutter companies do that work.

Seamless, and what it means

Most residential gutter here is seamless — formed on site from a coil by a machine on the truck, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. That is the standard and it is worth having. Material choice is usually aluminium, with copper and half-round as premium options.

Leaf guards

Worth it under heavy tree cover, unnecessary on an open lot, and the category is full of overselling. Ask what specific product, ask what the warranty covers, and ask whether it voids anything if you ever clean them yourself. Note that no guard eliminates maintenance in an area with pine and oak.

Practical

  • Ask whether the crew is employees or subcontractors, and whether they carry workers' comp — this is ladder work over concrete.
  • Ask what happens to the old gutters and the debris.
  • Get the linear footage in the quote. It is the only way to compare two numbers meaningfully.
