Choosing a martial arts school in Houston

Martial arts instruction is not licensed or regulated by the State of Texas. There is no board, no minimum standard, and belt rank is issued by the school or its parent organisation, not by any authority. That makes lineage and affiliation the closest thing to a credential.

Ask about lineage, and expect a straight answer

Whatever the art, a legitimate instructor can tell you who they trained under, for how long, and which organisation issued their rank. In Brazilian jiu-jitsu that lineage is traceable and taken seriously. In Taekwondo, affiliation with a recognised body such as Kukkiwon or the ATA is checkable. An instructor who is vague about where their black belt came from has told you something.

The question most parents should ask first

What is the actual goal of the children's programme? Schools differ enormously and all three of these are legitimate:

• Development-focused — discipline, confidence, coordination, structure. Belts come regularly.
• Competition-focused — tournaments, sparring, a smaller squad, slower promotion.
• Self-defence focused — scenario work, less emphasis on forms and rank.

A school selling one while a parent believes they are buying another is where the disappointment comes from.

Contracts are the recurring complaint in this trade

Long-term agreements, testing fees and belt fees are standard in the industry and not inherently wrong — but they should be disclosed before you sign, not discovered at the first grading. Ask:

• Is this month-to-month or a term contract, and what does cancellation require?
• Are testing and belt fees separate, and roughly what do they run per year?
• Are uniforms, sparring gear and tournament fees included or extra?
• Is there a family rate? Most schools have one and few advertise it.

Watch a class before you commit

Not a trial class you participate in — a regular class, from the side. Look at how the instructor corrects a child who is struggling, and whether the senior students are helping the newer ones. Every school looks good in a sales tour; you learn more in twenty minutes on a bench.
