Choosing a med spa in Houston

Nothing here is medical advice — this is about how these businesses are structured, which is the part consumers most often do not know.

The most important thing: who is legally responsible

In Texas, treatments such as injectables and medical lasers are medical procedures, and a med spa operates under the authority of a physician. There are rules about delegation and supervision — a licensed physician bears responsibility, and nurses, nurse practitioners or physician assistants may perform delegated treatments under that authority.

So the fair question, asked plainly at consultation:

• Who is the supervising physician for this practice?
• Who will actually be performing my treatment, and what is their licence?
• Is a licensed medical professional on site while treatments are performed?

Any reputable med spa answers these without hesitation. Reluctance to answer is the signal.

Injectables and lasers are different risk categories

• Injectables — the outcome depends heavily on the injector's experience with the specific product and the specific area. Ask how long they have been injecting, and how often they do the treatment you want.
• Energy devices and lasers — settings vary by skin type, and getting that wrong causes burns and pigment changes. Ask specifically whether the device is appropriate for your skin tone. Some laser technologies carry meaningfully higher risk on darker skin, and a practice that raises this before you do is one paying attention.

Practical questions

• What device or product, by brand? "Laser hair removal" and "filler" are categories, not products.
• What happens if I have a complication, and who do I call after hours? A practice with a clear answer has thought about it.
• Is the consultation free, and is it with the person performing the treatment?
• Are there package pressures? Prepaying for a course of treatments is common and reasonable; being pushed to prepay at the consultation before you have had one session is not.

On expectations

Be sceptical of before-and-after photographs without disclosure of how many sessions, what else was done, and how long after. Ask what a realistic result looks like for you specifically, and ask what it looks like if it does not work.
