Hiring a photographer in Houston
Photographers are not licensed anywhere in the United States, so this comes down to portfolio, contract and expectations — in that order of what people look at, and roughly the reverse order of what causes problems.
Look at full galleries, not a portfolio
A portfolio is the best few frames from years of work. Ask to see two or three complete galleries from sessions like yours. That tells you what an ordinary session with this photographer actually delivers, which is what you are buying. Any established photographer will share them.
Also make sure the sample work matches your conditions. Outdoor golden-hour portraits tell you very little about how someone handles a dim reception venue.
The contract questions that cause disputes
- How many edited images do I receive, and when? Get both numbers in writing. Turnaround of several weeks is normal; several months should be disclosed up front.
- What are the usage rights? You are typically licensed to use the images personally, while the photographer keeps copyright. That is standard. What matters is whether you can print freely, post them, and — separately — whether they may use your images in their own marketing.
- Are RAW files included? Almost always no, and that is normal rather than stingy. Editing is a substantial part of the craft.
- What is the deposit, is it refundable, and what happens if I reschedule?
- For weddings: is there a second shooter, and what happens if the photographer is ill? A photographer with a clear answer about backup coverage — and backup equipment — has been doing this a while.
Houston-specific
- Heat and light. Outdoor sessions here run at sunrise or the hour before sunset for most of the year. A photographer suggesting noon in July either has a shaded plan or has not thought about it.
- Rain. Ask the rescheduling policy explicitly. It will come up.
- Location permits. Some Houston parks and public spaces require a permit for professional photography. Ask who arranges it.
Specialisation
Family, newborn, senior portraits, weddings, real estate, product and branding photography are genuinely different skills with different equipment. Newborn work in particular involves safety practices worth asking about directly. Hire for the category, not just the aesthetic.
