Finding kids' activities in Houston

Programmes on this page range from dance and gymnastics to tennis, swimming and art. Two things are worth knowing before you sign anything.

Where regulation applies, and where it does not

Most enrichment classes — a weekly dance class, a tennis clinic, an art workshop — are not licensed childcare and are not regulated as such. Programmes that care for children for longer periods, particularly full-day camps and drop-off programmes, may fall under Texas child care regulation. If you are leaving a child for a full day, it is fair to ask whether the programme is licensed or registered, and what the staff-to-child ratio is.

Regardless of licensing status, ask the two questions that matter most:

  • Are instructors background-checked?
  • Who is certified in CPR and first aid, and is that person always present?

Structure varies more than parents expect

  • Session-based — a fixed block of four to eight weeks. Easier to try, easier to stop.
  • School-year commitment — common in dance and competitive gymnastics, often with recital or team fees attached.
  • Drop-in — pay per class.

Ask which one you are joining. A four-week block is a very different commitment from a September-to-June enrolment with a spring recital costume fee, and both are legitimate.

The costs that appear later

Ask directly what the annual total looks like, not the monthly rate. In this category the extras are predictable and frequently unmentioned: registration fees, uniforms or leotards, competition or recital fees, costumes, travel for teams.

Houston-specific

Swim lessons deserve a specific note. Year-round indoor programmes exist here and continuity matters far more than intensity — skills fade between summers. If you are choosing a swim programme, ask whether it teaches survival skills first (getting to the surface, floating, breathing) before stroke technique. For a young child that ordering is the whole point.

For outdoor programmes, ask what happens in August heat and what the rain policy is. Houston summers and Houston thunderstorms both cancel sessions, and knowing the make-up policy in advance saves the argument.
