Hiring a pool service in Houston

Residential pool cleaning is not a licensed trade in Texas. Two things separate companies: who actually shows up and what happens when equipment breaks.

The weekly service question that matters most

Ask: is it the same technician every week, and what day? A route with a consistent tech on a consistent day is the whole product. The most common complaint in this trade — by a wide margin, in every Houston-area recommendation thread we have collected — is a company that quietly stops showing up in August, which is exactly when a pool most needs attention.

Also ask what happens when your tech is on holiday. A one-person operation is often excellent and has no cover; a larger route has cover and less consistency. Both are fine if you know which you bought.

What is actually included

"Weekly service" means different things. Confirm:

• Brushing walls and steps, netting, emptying baskets, vacuuming — and how often each.
• Chemicals: included in the monthly price or billed on top? This is the single biggest cause of a surprise invoice.
• Filter cleans: included, or extra, and how many per year? In this climate a cartridge filter typically needs cleaning several times a year.
• Is the salt cell cleaned and inspected if you have one?

Repairs are a separate business

Many cleaning companies do not do equipment work, and some do only equipment. Pumps, heaters, automation systems, chlorinators and leaks are a different skill set. Ask up front whether they repair or refer — you do not want to discover it when the pump fails in July.

Houston-specific

• The season is long and the load is heavy. Heat and sun burn chlorine off fast; a pool here needs more attention for more of the year than in most of the country.
• Storms. After a heavy rain the chemistry swings and debris load spikes. Ask whether post-storm visits are extra.
• Hard water contributes to scale on tile and equipment over time.

Practical

Get the monthly price, what is included, chemical policy and the cancellation terms in writing. Month-to-month is normal in this trade — be cautious of anything asking for a long commitment up front.
