Check the hours before you drive

More than any other category on this site, restaurant hours here are unusual and change often. Several places named by neighbours run breakfast-and-lunch only and close at 2pm, some open at 4pm for dinner only, and several close two days a week rather than one. Family-run kitchens in particular will close for a week without announcing it anywhere except a sign on the door. Call ahead on a first visit.

Independent versus chain

The businesses on this page skew heavily independent, and that is deliberate — they came from people answering "who should more people know about?" A few practical differences:

• Independents are more likely to be cash-friendly, less likely to take reservations, and more likely to have a genuinely different menu week to week.
• Many are the owner's only location. If you have a good experience, telling them in person lands differently than it does at a chain.

Houston-specific

The metro's food is defined by how many food cultures overlap here — Gulf seafood, Texas barbecue, Vietnamese, Mexican and Tex-Mex, Cajun, Nigerian, Indian and Pakistani, Salvadoran, Korean. The best-regarded places are frequently in strip centres rather than on main roads, which is exactly why word of mouth beats a map search in this city.

The single highest-return thing an independent restaurant can do online is keep its Google Business Profile hours accurate and reply to reviews. Neither costs anything and both directly affect how often you show up when someone nearby searches for food.
